Illegal dumping — old appliances, construction debris, tires, furniture — is one of the most visible civic problems in Halifax. It appears in vacant lots, near parks, and on rural roads.
It's also one of the fastest issues to get resolved when reported properly.
How to Report Illegal Dumping
Best way: Report on SolveHFX
Take a photo of the dumped items
Pin the exact location
Note what's been dumped (appliances, tires, construction, etc.)
Submit — routes to HRM 311 + your councillor
Direct to HRM:
311: [311.halifax.ca](https://311.halifax.ca) or call 311
Email: contactus@311.halifax.ca
What Gets Prioritized
HRM prioritizes cleanup by category:
Hazardous waste: (paint, chemicals, batteries): 24-48 hours
Appliances or metal: 3-5 days
General construction debris: 5-10 days
Furniture or household waste: 1-2 weeks
Pro Tips for Fast Resolution
1. Be specific about what's dumped: "Old fridge and couch" is easier to plan cleanup for than "stuff"
2. Note if it's blocking access: If dumping blocks a path, park, or road, mention it — priority goes up
3. Check if it's on private land: If it's on private property, the owner may need to contact HRM directly
4. Report repeat dumping sites: Some locations get dumped on multiple times. Report each incident — patterns help HRM install barriers or increase surveillance
5. Take a photo of the street sign if visible: Helps HRM dispatch the right crew
Hazardous Materials?
If the dumping looks hazardous (drums, chemical containers, medical waste):
Don't touch it
Note the exact location
Mention "hazardous materials" in your report: — HRM will call in specialists
Report to Environmental Health: If it looks dangerous, email them at [envhealth@halifax.ca](mailto:envhealth@halifax.ca)
Why Dumping Happens
Illegal dumping clusters around:
Vacant properties (no surveillance)
Rural areas (low visibility)
Dead-end roads
Areas near industrial zones
If you see a pattern in your neighborhood (same spot keeps getting used), report it consistently — HRM will eventually install barriers, fencing, or cameras.
Report illegal dumping now — help keep Halifax clean.
